Oh that elusive summer body, it's always escaping us. You start thinking about getting in shape after the holidays, you go back to the gym and before you know it you start slacking off because you have plenty of time. Then, as if you entered some sort of time machine, you have been fast forwarded to the summer and you realize you are not where you want to be physically. Well, you are not the only one. Every year, people fall short of their weight loss and fitness goals but that doesn't mean you are not good enough to wear that two piece bikini and strut your stuff at the pool.
You see it daily, those Instagram posts with the perfectly edited, muffin top and cellulite free perfection. If you only knew what the raw, unedited image looked like you wouldn't think so little of yourself when you compare. I did some modeling back in the day and when I had to do photo shoots I thought to myself "ok I'll do my makeup real nice and I'll be good." Nope, no amount of makeup would have made me look like some of the edited photos that I got back from some photographers. Some of them didn't even look like me. Some of them looked like half of my body was missing, because it was (insert eye roll here).
We are living in a heavily edited and filtered society. When you see these images of perfect bodies, keep in mind that there was some posing and editing done. One example is Sia Cooper @diaryofafitmommy on Instagram. Sia makes it a point to let her followers in on this "illusion" of perfection. She habitually makes posts showing the difference between normal pictures and those pictures of perfection in which she is flexing and posing. Ladies and gentlemen, she definitely keeps it real. Don't let these images of perfection get you caught up in the comparison game and ruin your self esteem. You are just as beautiful, worthy and desirable as the next person abs or not. If you don't believe me ask Kendrick Lamar. Have you paid attention to the lyrics? Here's a little piece that keeps playing in my head as I sit here writing this blog post, "I'm so sick and tired of the Photoshop... Show me something natural I wanna feel some stretch marks" (Kendrick Lamar, Humble). So yeah, imperfections are sexy in case you doubted it.
Summer is around the corner and you didn't quite get that summer body you wanted... So what?! Go on with your bad self! Keep working for what you want to achieve. Always remember why you started in the first place and that will always keep you going. Now, I know that summer is made for fun and every day of the week has something to offer, what with Margarita Monday, Taco Tuesday, Wings Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday and the weekend trifecta that is Friday/Saturday/Sunday; they're all made for misbehaving. Just remember to check yourself when you have your fun. Find the balance you need to keep progressing towards your goal. We all fall off from time to time but don't give up on your progress. Wherever you are in your fitness journey, you are still better than when you started, even if you haven't gotten to your ideal summer body.
