The Beginning

Updated: Jan 31, 2019

My name is Christina Tapia Nunez, I am a Certified Personal Trainer with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science; I am also a wife and mother. Let me tell you how it all started...

In 2003, my mom was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. In order to help my mom manage her Diabetes, my siblings, dad and I changed our diets to help my mom make the right decisions. It really was a collective effort and, although it was rough in the beginning, we managed to make a lot of helpful changes. It was during this time that I decided to change my major to Health Science.

In 2005, a good friend of mine convinced me to join the gym with her. At first I really only went to the gym if she went. I remember the first time I stepped on an elliptical. I was dying after two minutes and I thought it impossible to get to five minutes, let alone 30 minutes to an hour. I was pretty discouraged, to say the least. I remember thinking about my family’s history of Diabetes and all the lives that it had claimed. I knew that I would be another if I didn’t keep making changes so I decided to challenge myself to do everything in my power not to be another victim of this disease. I pushed through the sweat, soreness and pain until I built myself up to 10 minutes, then 20, then 30 and before I knew it, I was doing hour long cardio sessions. I thought, “Wow, I wonder what else I can do?” So, I turned my attention to exercise classes, ab work, weights, etc. Little by little I began to see the fruits of my lifestyle change. I went from 191 in early 2005 to 139 in the Spring of 2006. I felt better than I ever felt before. The gym became a major part of my every day life. A day away from the gym just felt so wrong.

I continued to live this very active and healthy lifestyle for years until I decided I loved it so much I could make a career out of it. In 2010, I decided to become a Certified Personal Trainer. I was in the process of finishing college and doing too much. As a result, I did not pass the test. I felt so disappointed in myself and couldn't believe I missed a passing score by just two points. It was a major defeat but I decided to focus on other things. I went on to work an office job because it paid the bills and had good benefits. I did this for 7 mind numbing years, always wanting for more.

In 2015, I married my best friend and soul mate. We traveled, partied it up and had all the fun we could before we decided to settle down and start a family. I started thinking of things I wanted to accomplish before being a mother. The failure of that Personal Trainer certification was always in the back of my mind and so, I decided to go back and redeem myself. I studied hard and took the test in the summer of 2016. This time I passed with flying colors. I started off by training my brother, sister and husband but, then I got pregnant. Eight months after having my baby, I started back up again by training myself back into shape, then I began a training group. Finally, two months later I decided I was going to dive in and do what I had wanted to do for so many years - start my own personal training business. In August of 2018, I created Mamacita Fitness and it has been so rewarding.

I love helping other people discover what they are capable of and what amazing things their bodies can do. It is because of that amazing feeling that I decided to become a personal trainer. I want to help those who want to change their lifestyle and feel better than they have ever felt in their lives. I can't describe the passion I have for this. I can't explain the sense of pride I have every time I see progress in one of my clients. This is so rewarding to me, my clients' progress is my success and I strive to get them where they want to be in the safest and most effective way possible. Mamacita Fitness has already made a difference in many lives and I hope to continue doing so for many years to come!
